A man has hit out at the fashion industry for its sizing policies which he claimed are responsible for negative attitudes around women’s bodies after he tried on his girlfriend’s clothes.
Benjamin Ashton Cooper, from Delta, Pennsylvania, was outraged when, while helping his girlfriend Nicki Louloudis have a clear out, he found that many of the items she was throwing out were an extra large.
He was so annoyed with his findings that he tried on two of the tops and posted pictures of himself wearing them on Facebook and hit out at the way brands size clothes.
Benjamin, whose post has been shared more than 270,000 times, said he was appalled to find that the clothes fitted him.
So I’m helping my girlfriend clean out her closet (literally, shut up), and I noticed that a lot of what she was getting rid of was of the XL size,’ he wrote.
That didn’t look right to me, and here’s why: They fit me. I don’t say that to be silly or ironic. It p****s me off.
I am not an extra large man, and, more importantly, a woman my size is not an extra large woman.’
Holding women’s clothing sizes responsible for issues in society relating to female body image, such as eating disorders and catcalling, he then called for an end to body shaming.
He wrote: ’This b******t right here is why we have eight-year-olds with eating disorders. this s**t right here is why men shout ’f*****g fat hog!’ at even nominally curvy girls on the street.
Benjamin has been inundated with supportive comments from people commending his decision to speak out - including one from what appears to be his mother, Laura Hohne Cooper, who wrote: ’I am so d**n proud of my son!’
Nicki also praised Benjamin, writing: ’He was getting so mad as we were going through stuff.’
However, his post has also become the subject of some debate, with one person writing: ’While I appreciate the point you’re getting at, unfortunately it’s the other way around.
Believe it or not clothing sizes have actually gotten larger over the last 50 years under the same sizing scales, a sales tactic as our population has gained more and more weight.
Not to say [your] points about body shaming aren’t valid, however unfortunately a few old over washed and dried samples don’t necessarily support what you’re getting at.’
