The semifinal win over Wales was Portugal’s first within 90 minutes since the start of the tournament and would also prove to be its last, thanks to more extra time drama last night.
France went on the attack early on. Leading tournament goalscorer Antoine Greizmann went close with a header after 10 minutes.
On 24 minutes Portugal’s star man, Cristiano Ronaldo, was forced to come off after picking up a knee injury in a clash with Dimititri Payet.
Les Blues nearly got the win in stoppage time, but Andre-Pierre Gignac effort beat Rui Patricio but not the post.
After going to extra time, the Portuguese made the break through with 11 minutes remaining. Former Swansea forward Eder fired in a low-range shot from 25 yards that beat Hugo Loris. Portugal held on to win Euro 2016, against all odds.
