London's Buckingham Palace is opening a unique and unprecedented new exhibition which celebrates 90 years of Queen Elizabeth II's style.

The exhibition includes ceremonial and military attire, dress for state occasions and overseas tours, and also outfits for high-profile family celebrations.

It also includes her 1947 wedding dress, decorated with crystals and 10,000 seed pearls.

"On display is her Majesty the Queen's wedding dress, it's something very personal and important in her own life. But alongside this are other outfits worn for other family celebrations, including most-recently the outfit which her Majesty wore to the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge," said Caroline De Guitaut, exhibition curator.

Queen Elizabeth wore this outfit for the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton at Westminster Abbey on 29 April 2011.

But it's not just about weddings. In 1937, the then Princess Elizabeth and her sister Princess Margaret attended the coronation of their father King George VI.

They wore these matching cream dresses made of lace and silk tulle with gold embellishment, plus these purple velvet robes.

At the Queen's own coronation in 1953, she wore this white gown designed by long-time British designer Norman Hartwell.

"Arguably, two of the most important dresses in her majesty the Queen's life are her wedding dress from 1947 and her coronation dress from 1953. And for the first time ever these two dresses will be on display in the same exhibition here at Buckingham Palace. And they really amongst the most important pieces of 20th century British couture ever made," Caroline De Guitaut said.

The exhibit also features this military uniform worn by Elizabeth during the Second World War when she served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service.

"No-matter what is going on in our climate, she's reliably well turned out. She never misses a trick, she's always immaculate," said Sophie Goodwin, fashion director of Fashion magazine "Tatler".

And that continues to this day. The most recent item in the exhibit is this vivid green wool-crepe dress, coat and hat worn in June when the Queen attended the Trooping the Colour, the official celebration of her 90th birthday.

"Fashioning a Reign: 90 Years of Style from The Queen's Wardrobe' runs 23 July - 2 October at Buckingham Palace.
