A pair of identical twin sisters who both gained places at China’s prestigious Zhejiang University have won praise and admiration after their story recently went viral online.
On November 4, their university, based in the city of Hangzhou in east China’s Zhejiang Province, published an article on its website announcing that Du Xueqi had been admitted with an unconditional offer, whilst her sister Zhao Bingjing had won a government-funded scholarship.
The news was widely reported by national media and attracted much attention from netizens. Du and Zhao are both former gymnasts. Whilst still at kindergarten, the pair were singled out by coaches from a nearby sports school scouting for talent.
In 2008, they joined China’s national team. Although they always wore big smiles in front of spectators, they sometimes wanted to shed tears under the high-pressure training.
It was the "sense of achievement gained in competitions" that drove them to overcome the hardship and stick it out, one sister recalls.
During their sports career, they won many honorary titles including the all-round collective silver-medal during the Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships for Children and Teens. They also earned the all-round collective gold during the National Artistic Gymnastics Championships of China and at the Chinese Undergraduates Artistic Gymnastics Championships.
After retiring from the national team, the pair applied to Zhejiang University to major in sports training. Inferior to their peers academically, but eager to do well, they put in great efforts in their studies, especially in English which they began almost from scratch.
Aside from taking part in some performances at night, they spent all their spare time taking tutorial classes and doing homework. In addition, they also hired a foreign English teacher to give them individual tutoring.
Gradually, they not only caught up with other students but stood out amongst them, said a spokesperson from the university.
