A Japanese man believed to be long involved in promoting friendly ties between Japan and China was formally arrested by Chinese authorities, on a possible spy charge, Japanese media Jiji Press reported on Saturday.
据日本媒体时事通信社上周六报道,一名长期从事促进中日友好关系活动的男子被中国政府正式逮捕,指控他有可能从事间谍活动。
The report quoted anonymous sources as saying the Japanese man, who allegedly caused harm to China’s security, was taken into custody in 2016 when he visited Beijing for a symposium in July.
该报道引述匿名消息人士的话说,那名被捕男子据称危害了中国的安全,于2016年7月赴北京参加一场研讨会时被拘留。
The sources didn’t disclose the reason for his arrest, but said the person might be charged with spying. He was formally arrested on February 16, Kyodo News reported.
该消息人士并没有披露男子被捕的原因,但表示此人可能被以间谍罪起诉。据日本共同社报道,该名男子于2月16日被正式逮捕。
According to a previous report by the Chinese version of the Global Times, the man was believed to be Hideji Suzuki, the head of the Sino-Japanese Youth Exchange Association. It said the 60-year-old man has been studying Chinese-related topics for more than 30 years.
据《环球时报》中文版之前的一篇报道显示,该男子是中日青年交流协会主席铃木英司。据称这位60多岁的男子已经研究中国相关课题30多年了。
The association’s website said it was founded in September 2010 for communication between young Chinese and Japanese. However, the Global Times discovered the website could not be accessed.
从该协会网站了解到,协会成立于2010年,目的是为促进中日青年之间的沟通交流。但是《环球时报》发现该网站无法访问。
Chinese authorities have not confirmed the report as of press time.

China implemented the Counterespionage Law in 2014. Foreign individuals and organizations who engage in espionage activities or who encourage and sponsor others to conduct them will be punished, as with domestic organizations and individuals who spy on the country for foreign organizations and individuals.
中国从2014年起开始实施《反间谍法》。任何从事间谍活动的外国个人和组织,或者鼓励和赞助他人从事间谍活动的,以及为外国组织和个人而在中国从事间谍活动的个人和组织,都将受到惩处。
