Japan marked the 72nd anniversary of the atomic bombing on August 6 in the city of Hiroshima, where Prime Minister Shinzo Abe renewed calls for a move toward a world free of nuclear weapons.
Speaking at the annual ceremony at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park near the ground zero, Abe prayed for the peace of the victims and their families.
However, Japan sided with nuclear powers Britain, France and the US in July, to dismiss a UN treaty banning atomic weapons. this was rejected by critics for ignoring the safety threats such as the DPRK.
Japan suffered two nuclear attacks by the US at the end of the World War II – one in Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 and in Nagasaki three days later.
