The second round of Syrian peace talks begins today in Geneva. The UN’s office in Geneva says the talks are scheduled to last a week. More Syrian opposition groups are expected to participate, making this round more inclusive and increasing the chances of achieving tangible results.
The first round of talks started last month in Montreux, before moving to Geneva for face-to-face talks between the Syrian government and the coalition of opposition groups. Those talks yielded few results, revealing a huge gap between the two sides.
The Geneva Two peace conference aims to forge an agreement that will allow for the full implementation of the Geneva Communiqué adopted at the Geneva One conference held in January, 2012.
