RTÉ's Rachael English has said she was honoured and grateful to be inducted into the IMRO Radio Awards hall of fame. The Morning Ireland presenter was one of three inductees, the others were Keith Finnegan of Galway Bay FM and the late Albert Fitzgerald of Midlands 103.Speaking at the ceremony this morning, Rachael English said she had been fascinated by the medium since she got her first radio aged 10.

She said she grew up listening to broadcasters like the late Jim Fahy, but although she wanted to do the job, thought it would be impossible for a "girl from Shannon" who didn’t know anyone who worked in radio.

She said there may be people today who still feel that it’s not for them, or that they don’t hear anyone who sounds like them on the radio and more needs to be done to tackle that. In her case, she said she got her first break on Clare FM radio and paid tribute to Caimin Jones of Clare FM as well as many others she worked with along the way.

She also thanked the current team on Morning Ireland and said she wanted to particularly thank the listeners who have remained so loyal to the programme, saying it’s a "tremendous privilege to do the job we do".

Those who are inducted into the IMRO hall of fame are chosen from their peers in the radio industry and are highly respected for their skill, passion for their jobs and love for radio.

Chris Doyle, chair of the IMRO radio awards committee, said all three inductees were "giants" of the radio industry, and have made immense contributions to making the radio industry the vibrant success story that it is.
