Five Ukrainian naval ships remain trapped inside the country’s southern Naval Headquarters, in Western Crimea’s Myrnyi.
The Ukrainian navy says the ships cannot get out because their path is blocked by a Russian ship that’s been deliberately sunk. The acting Chief of Staff of the Ukrainian Navy base says the ship was sunk on Thursday, to block access in and out of the port. There are reports of an explosion before the ship sank.
The decommissioned Russian naval vessel was towed to the area on Tuesday, escorted by a warship and several gun boats. Meanwhile in eastern Ukraine, security checks have been tightened at the Ukraine-Russia border crossing near Kharkiv. Border guards armed with rifles and sniffer dogs are searching all vehicles crossing the border.
