这个短语表达的意思是:经过之前的多次尝试后,某件事情获得了成功且作用非凡。也可以形容东西质量好,信得过。

英国人喜欢说:“the proof of the pudding is in the eating,” 意为你根本不知道这个布丁有多美味,直到你真的吃了。布丁的美味是你吃出来的。英美的表达稍有差异但意思相同。
