happy(快乐的)
要表示「快乐」,最常见的字便是happy,指的是「感觉或表现出快乐的样态」,例如a happy marriage 是「一段快乐的婚姻」、a happy childhood是「一段快乐的童年」。
➢ I’m happy to know that Jason is coming with us.
知道Jason要和我们一起去,我很高兴。
➢ She is happy to help him out.
她乐意帮助他。
pleased(满意的)
please 有快乐的意思,但较强调「感到满意」,算是程度比较低的「快乐」。
➢ I’m pleased with my son’s grades this year.
我满意我儿子今年的成绩。
➢ The Johnsons are pleased with their new apartment.
Johnson夫妇满意他们的新公寓。
delighted(高兴的)
delighted的快乐程度比pleased 高,可以说是 very pleased(很满意的)之意,例如a delighted audience(很高兴的听众)。
➢ Lisa’s parents are delighted to see her after a year’s separation.
Lisa的父母在和她分开一年后很高兴见到她。
➢ I was delighted at your promotion.
我很高兴你升职了。
blissful(乐而忘忧的;幸福的)
blissful的快乐程度比delighted更高,通常形容快乐到忘了烦恼、有幸福感,例如:a blissful childhood(一段快乐无忧的童年)、a blissful holiday(一段乐而忘忧的假期)。
➢ I spent a blissful summer vacation with my grandparents in the countryside.
我和祖父母在乡下度过了一个幸福的暑假。
➢ She had three blissful hours of playing with her furkid.
她和她的毛小孩玩了三小时的幸福时光。
overjoyed(狂喜的)
overjoyed 的快乐程度十分高,通常是用来形容听到好消息的快乐。
➢ She was overjoyed that her husband was safe from the quake.
她的丈夫在地震中安然无恙令她欣喜若狂。
➢ Becky was overjoyed to hear that they had offered her the dream job.
Becky 很高兴听到他们给了她梦寐以求的工作。
thrilled(极为激动的;非常兴奋的)
thrilled 的快乐程度和overjoyed差不多,都是程度极高的快乐。
➢ She was thrilled that all her friends turned up to her birthday party.
她很兴奋所有的朋友都来参加她的生日趴。
➢ I was thrilled to be sitting next to such a distinguished author.
我很兴奋坐在这样一位杰出的作家旁边。
ecstatic(欣喜若狂的)
ecstatic 可说是程度数一数二高的快乐,属于极度快乐,快乐到有点失去理智。
➢ She was ecstatic at the news that she has been nominated for an award.
听到被提名奖项的消息,她欣喜若狂。
➢ Tommy was ecstatic over the win, jumping up and down the chair.
Tommy比赛获胜欣喜若狂,在椅子跳上跳下。
upset(心烦的;不高兴的)
upset是生气指数较小的英文字,例如:
➢ I hope you’re not still upset with me being late.
我希望你不要还对我迟到的事不高兴。
➢ He was upset that his girlfriend didn’t spend more time with him.
他因为女朋友没有多花时间陪他而不高兴。
annoyed(不悦的;有点烦的)
annoyed 是另一个生气指数不太高的字,其生气的主要理由通常是「不耐烦、没耐性」,或者别人作了令你心烦的事。
➢ She’ll be annoyed if we don’t finish by five.
若我们五点不结束,她会不悦。
➢ He was annoyed by my indifference.
我的毫不在乎让他不爽。
irritated(没耐性的生气;被刺激而不悦)
irritated 与 annoyed 的意思相近,是「没耐性的生气;被刺激而不悦」,例如:
➢ Mr. Chen was irritated by all his questions.
陈老师因为他的一堆问题而不耐。
➢ I was beginning to get irritated at the long delay.
我对于这长时间的延迟开始感到不耐。
vangry(生气的)
angry 的生气指数比前几个字高,通常是因为别人对你不好或你被不公平对待而产生的怒气。
➢ Patients are angry at the increased cost of medicines.
病人因为药费增加而生气。
➢ He is angry with himself for making such a stupid mistake.
他为自己犯下愚蠢的错误而生气。
mad(愤怒的)
mad 的生气指数比 angry 高,比较常用在口语中。
➢ His insult drives me mad!
他的侮辱让我火冒三丈!
➢ People are mad at the team for losing the match.
民众对这支输了比赛的队伍十分恼怒。
furious/infuriated(满腔怒火的;大发雷霆的)
这两个字的生气指数又比 mad 高,可说是「大怒」。
➢ He was furious at her lies.
他对她的谎言气到不行。
➢ I was infuriated by their criticism.
他们的批评把我给气炸了。
outraged(震怒的)
outraged 生气指数可说最高,通常是因为震惊而产生的愤怒,或认为某件事是错的而产生的强烈情绪,例如:
➢ They are outraged by the President’s lies.
他们因为总统的谎言而气坏了。
➢ Customers were outraged by the oil price increases.
消费者因为油价的上涨而气坏了。
