Dignitaries have been arriving in Kigali ahead of the commemoration ceremony, among them, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. He says it’s vital the international community puts into practice the lessons from Rwanda.

"Never again this should never happen in human history, we have learnt tragic and hard lessons from 1994." Ban Ki-moon said.

The UN’s failure to prevent the genocide haunts the organisation to this day. But Rwanda’s president made clear, he sees Ban as a partner for the commemoration.

"For me, its of great importance that the SG is here it underscores the partnership that we have globally even in times of tragedy." Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda said.

Still, 20 years on from Rwanda, there’ve been ethnic clashes in other African hotspots -the Central African Republic the most worrying.

Ban wants to send in thousands of peacekeepers there to avoid a repeat of what happened here.

"I hope the security council will act as soon as possible on my recommendations to establish peace keeping operations in C.A.R." Ban Ki-moon said.

Ban flew into Rwanda, after visiting the C.A.R’s capital, Bangui.
