work out
现在健身已经是种潮流,常常会听到人家说去 work out。但到底应该是在说 work out 还是 workout?两者有什么差别?虽然两者都解释为「健身」或「运动」,但两者的词性不一样,work out 是分开两个字,属动词片语,传达「动作」的意思;而 workout 是一个字,为「名词」。
Let’s hit the gym and work out together tomorrow; it’s always better to go to the gym with someone.
明天一起去健身房健身吧,有搭档一起比较好!

work off
work off 是动词片语,可解释为「消除、去除、消耗」。要把多余的脂肪消除掉,就可以说 work off the fat。或是我们也可以说 get rid of the excess fat,get rid of 的意思和 work off 相似。
I’ve finally shed some pounds; it wasn’t easy trying to work off the fat.
我终于都减了几公斤了,要消除脂肪真难。
I listen to classical music to help me work off any stress that I have.
我听古典音乐来消除压力。
weight training
weight training 是「重量训练」的意思,也就是我们常讲的「重训」。重训时需要透过使用不同的健身器材 (workout equipment) ,来锻炼肌肉以提升肌力 (muscle strength)、爆发力 (muscular power)、肌耐力 (muscular endurance)。除此之外,重训还可以雕塑身材线条。
Weight training is key to building muscles, but don’t forget about sleep and the food you eat. They are also important in the process of forming your muscles.
重训对于肌肉的生成是很重要,但别忘记睡眠以及你吃的食物在增加肌肉的过程中也同样重要。

ripped
ripped 是形容词,来自其动词形 rip (撕裂),但是 ripped 和撕裂一点关系都没有,在用作形容身材时,ripped 是指「肌肉线条分明的、精壮的」。
A: When did you start working out? I remembered that you were skinny fat in the past.
B: Three years ago.
A: You look so ripped now.
A: 你什么时候开始健身的?还记得以前你很像泡芙人。
B: 3 年前开始的。
A: 你现在看起来很精壮。
spare tire
tire 的意思是「轮胎」,spare 可指「备用的」或是「多余的」, 照字面上 spare tire 可解释为「备用轮胎」。可是当用作形容身材时,想像一下哪个部位最有可能像轮胎般圆圆滚滚的,然后又是多余的?没错,就是「腰间赘肉」啦,也就是我们中文常说的「游泳圈」。
I want to get rid of my spare tire; what kind of exercise should I do?
我想摆脱掉我的「游泳圈」,我可以做什么类型的运动?
A: Look at my spare tire; how am I supposed to wear a bikini this summer?
B: Don’t worry about it; just hit the gym with me starting tomorrow.

abs
abs 是 abdominal muscles 的简称,abdominal 意思是「腹部的」,因此 abs 可简单称为「腹肌」。夏天女生爱穿露肚装、到沙滩更是要穿比基尼,所以女生都希望肚子可以平坦 (flat tummy) ,如果可以的话配上「马甲线」 (firm abs) 就更好了;男生追求的当然就是「六块肌」(six-pack) 以及「人鱼线」(v-line abs) 。要知道腹肌明显与否,跟我们的体脂 (body fat) 是有很大的关系喔!
A: What kind of equipment should I use to get abs?
B: First of all, I think you should lose weight and lower your body fat before trying to get a six-pack.
A: 想要练腹肌的话,应该要用什么器材?
B: 首先我认为你应该要先减重,把体脂降低,再来练六块肌。
