set up
这个片语有三种意思:建立、准备、陷害。意思相差甚远,故在文章中看到却不确定意思时,记得要仔细观察上下文,才能对应出最正确的意思喔。
1. 建立、创立 (制度、习惯、方法等)
My mom set up a rule that I must finish my homework before playing video games.
妈妈规定我要先写完作业才能玩电动。
2. 设定、准备
I need to go to classroom early in order to set up the projector before the presentation.
我得早点到教室才能在报告前把投影机准备好。
3. 陷害、设陷阱
My friends set me up on a blind date.
我朋友陷害我,安排我去相亲。
set back 使延迟、倒退
字面的意思是放 (set) 回去 (back),原本要开始却被「放回去」,意思就延迟、倒退的意思。
The opening of the new restaurant has been set back by a few weeks.
这家新餐厅将延后几个星期开张。
set in 来到
放 (set) 进来 (in) 就是「来到」的意思。

set against 使某人和某人竞争、对抗
against 本身就是对抗的意思,加了一个动词 set 就产生了动作,使某人和某人竞争、对抗。
He always sets a friend against another.

set aside
这个片语其实用想像的就可以清楚地记下它所包含的三个意思:aside 是旁边的意思,而把一个东西摆在旁边就为「储存、保留」;把人摆在旁边,就成了「不理会」;最后是,把东西摆在一旁置之不理,就为「驳回、撤销」的意思。

Each week, Melody tries to set aside a few dollars from her salary in order to get a ticket to the concert of her favorite band.

2. 不顾、不理会
He set his little brother aside, trying to focus on his work.

set out
out 是「外面」,而你要出发、动身,是不是势必要出去外面呢?用这种方式思考就很容易记住了。那这个片语的另一个意思「展开计画」又要怎么解释呢?当你要展开一项新计画或任务时,就是要脱离你现在的动作,并开始展开新的计划。
