water rationing (n.) 限水
限水的英文可不是limit water唷!必须使用water rationing这个惯用语,ration是「定量配给」的意思,而限水就是指将水库的水做限制、定量供给,因此英文使用water rationing。
e.g. If there is still a lack of rain, third-phase water rationing may be launched soon.
(如果还是没下雨的话,第三阶段限水马上就会实施)

inundate 现在很常被用来形容某事如洪水般扑来,使人无法招架

这个字也很实用,可用在具体或抽象的事物上
e.g. Despair overwhelmed you. 绝望将你淹没了 (这里的淹没是抽象的意涵)

tread water 停滞不前
tread是「踩;踏」的意思,tread water是指(游泳)踢水、踏水,它还有另一个引申义是在原地踏水、停滞不前的意思。通常如果是表达「停滞不前」,用进行式居多。
e.g. The sales didn’t increase at all. The company is only treading water.
(销售额完全没增加,公司状态一直停滞不前)
hold water (言词、论点、计画)合理、站得住脚
e.g. What he said holds water. 他说的话是合理的
e.g. Your argument does not hold water. 你的论点站不住脚
throw/pour cold water on sth 泼冷水
没错!泼冷水直翻就对了,要注意的是,中文是说对某人泼冷水,但英文通常是对某「事物」泼冷水。
e.g. Peter threw cold water on Kelly’s joke. Peter对Kelly的笑话泼冷水
test the water/waters 试试水温
e.g. I’ve got some plans but I was not sure if they are feasible so I asked my friends to test the waters.
(我有些计划但不确定是否可行,所以我问问朋友来试试水温)
fish out of water 感到不自在的人;不得其所的人
fish out of water字面上是「离开水的鱼」,引申为人因不熟悉环境而感到不自在或不得其所。
e.g. I feel like a fish out of water in the new company.

water off a duck’s back (批评)对人没有影响;耳边风
鸭子身上的毛就像雨衣一样,水在上面待不住,一下就滑下来了,对鸭子来说毫无影响,此句话引申为某事物对人没有影响、被当作耳边风。
e.g. Our criticism of his new plan is like water off a duck’s back.
(我们对他新计画的批评就像耳边风一样,对他毫无影响)
