A Hong Kong man was arrested on suspicion of killing his mistress and their son in Shenzhen and storing their bodies in a rented apartment for 14 years, local media reported on Tuesday.
Kan Wai-nam, 53, has been renting two Shenzhen apartments since 2000, but failed to pay his April rents, according to Nanfang Metropolis Daily. When his landlord called him, he told the landlord to help him clean the apartments and that he would pay him soon.
During a sweep of one of Kan's apartments, a cleaner noticed an unpleasant smell coming from a woven bag under a bed. Inside the bag, the cleaner found human bones. The landlord immediately reported the findings to the police.
Kan was arrested upon entering Shenzhen from Hong Kong.
Police said he lived with a young woman in Shenzhen during the late 1990s. Their son was born in 1998.
After the son's birth, Kan paid for their rent and gave his mistress a 2,000-yuan monthly allowance, according to police. Authorities said he then indulged in gambling and accrued high debts.
Police said that in May 2000, as his mistress and son took an afternoon nap, Kan strangled the woman and the 2-year-old boy and threw their bodies into a woven bag.
He then put the woven bag into a crate and told movers that it was a home appliance to be moved to his other apartment on the top floor of the same building, police said.
