Over 200 boats and around 30 planes took part in Monday’s 24-hour search operation. South Korean coastguards are continuing to remove oil leaked from the ferry as divers carry on their search for missing passengers. A 300-meter-long oil plume was spotted surrounding the ferry in the waters off Jindo Island.

The oil spill will not only affect rescue operations, but is likely to impact on the local fishing industry. The Sewol left the western port city of Incheon on last Tuesday night for the southern resort island of Jeju. It capsized off Jindo Island on Wednesday morning. Among the 476 passengers and crew were 325 high school students and 15 teachers on a four-day field trip.
