Rescuers in Afghanistan have given up hope of finding any more survivors, in a double landslide that is feared to have killed more than 2,500 people in the northeast province of Badakhshan.

International aid organizations began sending food, tents and medical supplies to displaced villagers in the remote village of Hobo Barikthe. The landslide buried about 370 homes, which officials say housed in total some 2,500 people.

The United Nations says at least 350 bodies have been recovered so far. The twin landslides occurred on Friday, following heavy rains earlier in the week. When people rushed to help victims trapped in the first landslide, a second, bigger landslide came down, burying the rescuers and more houses. Richard Danziger, Chief of Mission for the International Organization for Migration, says the landslide is amongst the worst natural disasters to hit Afghanistan.

"This is the most tragic natural disaster to hit Afghanistan in quite sometime. In fact, the last two weeks have been particularly bad and there’s been considerable loss of life from flooding or from landslides from the rain, and I think what is important, is not just to be able to provide this immediate response, but we in the International Organisation for Migration are very much focusing on helping villages prevent these disasters in the first place." Danziger said.
