W: May I come in, Mr Sun?

M: I’d rather you didn’t, Miss Yang. I’m very busy now.

W: Can I try later then?

M: Yes, of course.

(An hour later…)

W: Is it all right for me to come in now, Mr Sun?

M: Well, uh…I’m still pretty busy, but… all right. Come in. What can I do for you?

W: Do you mind if I sit down?

M: Not at all. Take a seat. Now what can I do for you?

W: I want to leave the department. Do you think I could put info a transfer?

M: Yes. But why should you want to do that?

W: Do you mind if I speak frankly?

M: Not at all. Go ahead.

W: Well. You see, I don’t like the office. I don’t like the staff. And I’m afraid of you. And I don’t want to go one. So may I put info a transfer?

M: Yes. I’d be delighted if you did.

Dialog 2

M: Can I leave early today?

W: Sure. I don’t mind.

M: And can I come in late tomorrow?

W: I don’t see why not.

M: And may I take Friday off?

W: Go ahead. It’s OK with me.

M: One more thing. Would you give me a ten-dollar raise?

W: No.

Dialog 3

—— I wonder if I could possibly borrow two bikes from the shop tomorrow? I’ll take actual care of them. I promise you.

—— Well. All right, Mark. Just this once. But you have to pick them up yourself. I’m a very busy man.

—— Oh, that’s all right. It’s very kind of you. Can I come around now?

—— I’d rather you didn’t come immediately as I said I’m very busy at the moment. Come after lunch, Mark.

Dialog 4

M: Do you think I could use your car tomorrow? I’ve got a date with this girl, see? And…

W: I see. Well , now you can have it as long as you bring it back by 9:30.

M: 9:30? That’s no good. Couldn’t I have it a bit longer? Even if I fill up the tank?

W: I’m afraid not, Nick. That’s the best I can do.

Dialog 5

M: Mum, can I finish my homework later?

W: Sorry. You know the rules.

M: But I want to watch TV now.

W: That’s out of the question.

M: Please.

W: Not a chance.

M: Not even for an hour?

W: Sorry, it’s impossible.

Dialog 6

W: What? You want to leave early?

M: Yes. Can I?

W: Do you really need to?

M: Yes. Is it OK with you?

W: Is it important?

M: Yes. Do you mind?

W: You really have to?

M: Yes. Will you let me?

W: I guess so.

Dialog 7

M: Good morning. Can I see Mr Jackson, please?

W: Well. Have you got his permission?

M: Yes. We have an appointment at eight o’clock.

W: What’s your name, please?

M: Robert. Philips Robert.

Well. I’d like to see something about myself. I studied Japanese at university. Then I got a job with advertising agency as a secretary. In 2000, I went to abroad with a friend. Then I worked for a company which sold books and paintings. I was still single at 28. Then my parents started to worry. I was very interested in Jazz and I met my boyfriend at a Jazz club. My parents didn’t want their daughter to marry a foreigner. Without their permission, I gave up. But I still thought of it.
