The situation in the eastern regions of Ukraine remains tense. In Slavyansk, gun battles between government troops and anti-government forces are continuing. On Wednesday, the government troops strengthened their defences at all checkpoints leading into the city. Tanks were stationed at these checkpoints and passing vehicles were being examined. Anti-government forces too manned a checkpoint in a suburb of the city.
In the southern Ukrainian port of Mariupol, anti-government activists seized back the city hall, just hours after being ousted by government troops. A witness said government troops stormed the city hall and destroyed office furniture and equipment, but withdrew later.
On the same day, around 50 anti-government protesters blocked policemen from moving at least 14 detained activists. There were no reports of any casualties.
