39-year-old suspect in custody over consulate arson attack
The FBI says it has made an arrest in a fire set intentionally at the Chinese Consulate General in San Francisco last week.
In a press conference, the FBI says the suspect is named Yan Feng, a 39-year-old Chinese national who has permanent resident status. It says Feng turned himself in to local police on Friday, and currently faces two criminal charges, causing damage to property of a foreign government and arson.
The FBI didn’t tell the motives, but says it is approaching the case purely as a criminal matter, not an act of terrorism.
The incident happened on New Year’s Day. Video cameras record the suspect pouring two buckets of gasoline on the consulate's gate and set it ablaze. The fire charred a doorway and damaged the lobby of the building. No one was hurt.
