Another gang rape and ruthless twin murders in India has sparked international outrage. Two girls were raped, strangled, then hanged from trees in the North Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Three people have been arrested in the case.
There is outrage in India after two girls aged 14 and 16 were gang-raped in Badaun in north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
The anger has stemmed out of police apathy and the brutal gang rape after which the girls were strangled and then hanged on a tree.
The twin gang rape in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh has garnered widespread anger not just in India but also beyond. It's widely believed that both the girls were killed because of their lower caste.
One of the girl’s father has alleged that the police refused to register the complaint after they found the girls to be from a lower caste. The boys who raped the girls were from an upper caste. In many parts of India, caste system still runs deep and is used to wield power on people from lower caste. 4 people including a policeman has been arrested in the case.
"We have arrested the main accused. We have also formed a special team of senior police officials to raid the possible hideouts of the other accused. The medical report has confirmed that both the girls were raped. In a post mortem report, the doctors have found a case of being hanged after death. A high powered forensic team has been also constituted for further investigation." Alul Saxena, Police Official, Badaun, Uttar Pradesh said.
Charges of rape by a low-caste father has struck a cord here as for decades upper caste hindus were free to attack the lower cast ones.
In villages like Badaun, victims of rapes have been shunned by the families and the villagers and many cases have gone unreported.
Its the December 2012 gang rape in Delhi that led to massive protests that has effectively managed to change this as more women now come out and report cases of rape and sexual assault.
