Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying has condemned the protesters who tried to force their way into the Legislative Council Building on Friday and injured ten security personnel.

"What happened on Friday night came after a string of illegal incidents in the past. And it was even more serious. So we should strongly condemn the acts." Leung Chun-ying said.

Friday’s rally was against government plans for a new town development in the northeastern New Territories. Leung says the development project would help ease the tight house supply, especially for the public housing.

A Hong Kong government spokesman said the violence was totally unacceptable and he strongly condemned the protesters’ actions. The spokesman said Hong Kong is a law-abiding society, and the government will not tolerate violent acts. He said the protesters posed a serious threat to people at the scene and seriously undermined public order, which must be strongly condemned.

Police are now conducting a full investigation and those involved will be held criminally responsible. The spokesman said that Hong Kong’s government respects people’s right to express their views and the freedom of assembly, but citizens must obey the law and not undermine public order.
