Continued fighting at Libya’s main airport in the capital Tripoli has damaged at least 20 aircraft.
Tripoli International Airport became a battlefield over the weekend after a local militia launched an attack to wrest control from a rival armed group. Officials said it was the worst fighting in the capital Tripoli since November.
The violence has halted traffic at the airport, stranding Libyans abroad who were planning to return home for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Speaking at a televised news conference, the Prime Minister’s Spokesman Ahmed Alamin said at least 31 planes were parked at the airport at the time of the fighting, and their maintenance and repair would take a long time. He added that the volatile situation at the airport could potentially lead to a strike by workers.
