Some Japanese politicians are trying to weaken or expunge the role of the Potsdam Proclamation. The Japanese political commentator, Jiro Motozawa, says this is a dangerous road to take. He says the Potsdam Proclamation demanded that Japan eliminate militarism. He says spirit of the proclamation is of historical significance and should not be repudiated today. Meanwhile, US history professor Peter Kuznick has criticized Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe for violating Japan’s constitution.
"There are a group of people in Japan who don’t reflect on the war and they don’t agree with the Potsdam Proclamation. But now they are in power. It makes the situation in Japan worse. For Japanese and Asian people, this is a serious issue that cannot be ignored. I think Japanese citizens have the responsibility to solve the issue." said Jiro Motozawa, Japanese Political Commentator.
"Even today, Abe might be overplaying his hand, with his aggressive military confrontation policies. Aside from declaration that was made 69 years ago, Abe is undermining, doing things that directly go against Japan’s own constitution. I think that’s even more troubling." said Peter Kuznick, History Professor, American University.
