China's top political advisor,Yu Zhengsheng, is in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. He's leading a central government delegation to attend celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of the region's founding.

On Tuesday, the chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference visited various ethnic groups in the northern region of Altay. Yu chaired a meeting with local cadres and residents. He said economic and social development in Altay has made great achievements in the past 60 years. And he noted ethnic unity is the prerequisite and foundation of economic development and improvement of people's lives.
Yu Zhengsheng expressed the hope that cadres and residents of different ethnic groups would have more contact, and work together to safeguard unity and stability. The delegation also inspected a senior activity center and a settlement village for herders.
