Terrorism is a major concern in Xinjiang. But things are improving, according to a white paper published by the central government on Thursday. It says most terrorist groups in Xinjiang have been eliminated at the planning stage.
Figures show that by April, more than 96 percent of terrorist groups were taken down at the planning stage, and 112 suspects turned themselves in to the police.
A total of 181 terrorist groups have been dismantled during a year-long campaign. The campaign was launched in May 2014, a day after the market bombing in the regional capital Urumqi that killed 39 people.
