Xi and Merkel shook hands at the Diaoyutai state guest-house before sitting down for talks. Earlier Thursday, Merkel also met Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and oversaw the signing of various commercial agreements.
China and Germany signed a deal that will see Chinese airlines buy 130 Airbus jets, sending shares in the European plane-maker higher. Merkel has brought a delegation of nearly 20 executives representing the machinery, auto, electrical and telecommunications sectors. Business leaders will join her for a lunch with Li on the second day of the visit.
