A powerful magnitude-6.9 earthquake has struck northern Afghanistan, with tremors felt as far away as India.

The United States Geological Survey says the epicenter was in the Ashkasham area, close to the border with Pakistan. At least 37 people were injured in the Pakistani city of Peshawar, the worst-hit area.

Local hospital authorities say most of the injuries were caused by bricks of the collapsed houses. Officials say the quake's duration was 59 seconds in parts of the country. They warn several mild to moderate aftershocks may hit in the next few hours.

The region has a history of powerful earthquakes caused by the northward collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates.
