Chinese couples can have two children starting today
Starting today, every couple in China can have two children legally.
That comes after China's top legislature abolished a decades-long single-child policy last month. Previously pregnant women who already had a child, were subjected to family planning measures, such as forced abortions or sterilization.
China's "one couple, one child" policy is estimated to have prevented some 400 million births. The new law can effectively counter a shrinking labor force, and an aging population. It is estimated that about 90 million of couples, will be allowed to have a second child under the new rule.
