China’s leading search engine Baidu has posted its first-ever decline in quarterly revenue in the wake of regulatory pressure over ads.
在其广告业务深受监管压力后，中国搜索引擎巨头百度宣布季度收入首次下降。
Revenue fell to 18.3bn yuan ($2.7bn) for the third quarter, 0.7% down from a year earlier.
百度第三季度总营收为人民币183亿元（约合27亿美元），比去年同期下滑0.7%。
The drop comes as a government curb on its advertising continues to affect profit.
这是在政府监管其广告业务后，持续对营收产生影响的后果。
The crackdown by regulators was in response to paid-for ads listing suspect, ineffectual medical treatment.
监管机构的打压是因为百度有偿广告曾涉嫌虚假医疗推广。
It comes after an outcry over the death of a student who tried an experimental cancer therapy that came top of the list in his Baidu web search.
该指令发生在一名学生搜索到百度置顶的一种实验性癌症疗法并尝试无效去世，引起舆论一片哗然之后。

Student Wei Zexi, who was diagnosed with synovial sarcoma in 2014, had said he found out about a controversial cancer treatment through Baidu.
学生魏则西于2014年被诊断患上滑膜肉瘤，他曾称通过百度搜索找到了一种有争议的癌症治疗方法。
The treatment was unsuccessful and the 21-year-old student died on 12 April.
治疗并未成功，这名21名的学生于4月12日去世。
Before his death, Wei publicly accused the hospital of misleading him and his family of the treatment’s effectiveness, and criticised Baidu for selling search listings for medical information to the highest bidder.
魏则西去世之前曾公开指责这家医院将他和他的家人在治疗方案的有效性上误入了歧途，并控诉百度竞价发布虚假医疗信息的行为。
Baidu has denied ranking hospitals in promoted search results solely based on how much they paid, and says the hospital had been approved by the Beijing municipal government.

Baidu is China’s largest search engine with 80% market share and is often compared to Google.

The company also said it expects revenue for the fourth quarter to again show a slight decrease from the previous year.
百度表示它预计第四季度营收与去年相比仍将会有小幅下滑。
Earlier this month, Baidu had announced a $3 billion investment fund focused on mid- and late-stage start-ups to explore new growth opportunities.
10月初，百度曾宣布了一项30亿美元的投资基金，主要集中于初创公司的中后期发展，以寻求新的机会。
Baidu is also investing in artificial intelligence and self-driving car technology.
