A member of the U.S. armed forces was killed and two others wounded in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province, a fierce battleground between the Taliban insurgents and the U.S.-backed Afghan government forces.
The Pentagon said U.S. troops came under fire in the town of Marjah while accompanying Afghan special operation forces.
U.S. special operation forces have been in Helmand province advising and assisting their Afghan counterparts. A U.S. helicopter was damaged in the incident. Afghan troops were also injured in the fighting.
The incident marks the first U.S. military death of 2016 in Afghanistan, and underscores the continued danger in the region.
