BEIJING--In a letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe proposed that the two leaders meet each other more frequently to iron out problems in bilateral relations and move them forward.
北京电 在致中国主席习近平的一封信中，首相安倍晋三提议两位领导人更为频繁地会晤，消除双边关系中存在的问题，并推动其向前发展。
The letter was delivered by Toshihiro Nikai, secretary-general of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, who met Xi at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse here May 16.
这封信由执政的自由民主党干事长二阶俊博转交，二阶俊博于5月16日在钓鱼台国宾馆与习近平会晤。
Nikai also called on Xi and other Chinese leaders to visit Japan by the end of next year, which will mark the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Japan-China Treaty of Peace and Friendship.
二阶俊博还请求习近平和中国其他领导人于今年年关之前访日，纪念《中日和平友好条约》缔结40周年。
Abe wrote of his hopes to “achieve mutual visits in the future based on high-level dialogue on many occasions.”
安倍写道，他希望“未来能实现互访，并在许多情况下进行高层对话。”
The letter emphasized that Japan wants stable and friendly relations with China in all areas, based on the idea of a mutually beneficial strategic relationship.
信中强调，在互利战略关系的基础上，日本希望与中国发展全方位的稳定、友好关系。
Abe also lauded China’s Belt and Road initiative, known as the new Silk Road project, which aims to create a large economic zone that connects Asia, the Middle East and Europe. He expressed interest in discussing the initiative further with Xi and cooperating on the project.
安倍还赞赏了中国的新丝路计划“一带一路”，其旨在建立一个连接亚洲、中东和欧洲的大型经济区。他对与习近平进一步讨论“一带一路”，并且展开合作表达了兴趣。
Nikai was visiting Beijing to attend the forum for the Belt and Road project.
当时，二阶俊博正在出访北京参加“一带一路”论坛。
In the meeting, Xi referred to Nikai as his “old friend,” and warmly welcomed his attendance, saying “It shows Japan’s proactive attitude toward the Belt and Road initiative.”
会晤期间，习近平称二阶俊博为“他的老朋友”，并热烈欢迎他出席论坛。习近平表示：“这表明日方对一带一路持积极态度。”
Xi also showed his willingness to improve China-Japan ties and hopes for “future-oriented” bilateral relations.
习近平还指出，他愿意改善中日关系，希望发展“未来导向型”的双边关系。
However, it remains unclear whether this single meeting could patch up some tricky issues that have dogged ties between the two countries.
然而，尚不清楚此次会晤能否解决长期困扰两国关系的一些棘手问题。
Xi pointed out that “there is a need to work on some prominent issues,” alluding to the territorial dispute over the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea and Japan’s oft-stated concern about China’s maritime expansion in the South China Sea.
习近平指出，“有必要解决一些突出问题”，暗指“东海钓鱼岛的领土纠纷，以及日本担忧的中国南海海洋扩张问题。”
Xi also appeared to be leery of Abe’s push to amend the pacifist Constitution.

According to a source who accompanied Nikai, the Chinese side responded to Nikai’s invitation for Chinese leaders to Japan, saying only that they “would like to consider it.”
