So who is Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman? What makes him world's most wanted drug lord?
Guzman led the Sinaloa Cartel, an international drug trafficking, money laundering, and organized crime syndicate. The cartel controls half of drug trading in Mexico. Their drug trafficking reaches many regions, from Northern American and Australia to Europe.
He was captured in 1993 in Guatemala, extradited and sentenced to 20 years in prison in Mexico. After bribing prison guards, he was able to escape from a federal top-security prison in 2001. He was wanted by the governments of Mexico and the United States, and by INTERPOL. The US even offered a five-million dollar reward for information leading to his capture.
The drug lord was eventually found and arrested by Mexican authorities in February 2014, but less than 18 months later, he managed to escape from prison through an underground tunnel.
