Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi, the second son of ousted Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi, has been freed from captivity, announced an armed group on Saturday.
Abu Bakr al-Siddiq Battalion said the 44-year-old son of the slain president was released in the western town of Zintan under amnesty promulgated by the parliament in the east of the country.
The fall of Gaddafi in 2011 led to the North African country slipping into chaos with armed militants clashing and rival governments vying for control. The authorities in the east do not recognize the Tripoli-based government of national accord (GNA), which is backed by the United Nations.
Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi, who was taken into custody in 2011 while trying to flee to neighboring Niger as the revolution against his father’s regime raged, left the city, although it was not possible to ascertain his current whereabouts or destination.
He is accused of incitement to violence and murdering protesters.
In 2015, a court in Tripoli sentenced him to death along with other officials of the former regime.
